Regency Men's Upcycle Project - Sewing a Waistcoat and Breeches

November 9, 2020 Jennifer Serr
Getting Ready for Jennifer's Birthday - Part 2 Menswear.png

Menswear. Hmmm. I do not have a lot of experience with menswear and this was my first foray into it in a long time. For my event, it would be historic menswear and I have even less experience than that. Making something for my husband, well that is a whole other situation. He’s not really into dressing up, but agreed to it for my 50th birthday. Good man. I decided simpler was better. He’s the gent pictured on the right in the photo above, incognito without his requisite gray Levis and zip hoodie. I made the waistcoat and breeches. The shirt, hat and stockings were purchased and I still have a long way to go.

Getting Ready for my 50th Birthday - Recycled Regency Style

November 2, 2020 Jennifer Serr
Getting Ready for Jennifer's Birthday.png

I’m turning 50 so I’m going to party like it’s 1799-1820. Yes! you heard it here. A party like no other, socially distanced, at the park in regency attire. We’ll all be wearing masks and it will be highly civilized. A girl’s got to celebrate half a century, after all.

As a kid, I always wanted to be both older and live in another time. Now I have my wish on both accounts. There is nothing like embracing the age you are in. At 49+ I’m embracing the fact that I LOVE to dress up in costume and that I love making costumes.

Vintage Coat Renovation - Sewing a 1930's Inspired Ensemble

November 26, 2019 Jennifer Serr
1930's Polka Dots & Cashmere Blog.png

Do you ever have fabric that feels like it’s money burning a hole in your pocket? Well, I sure did when my friend Laurie Ann gave me this gorgeous polka dot viscose shantung. Oh, my, it was love at first site. And it was gifted along with a coordinating brown trouser weight fabric as well. I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to sew up a new outfit, perfect for our cool autumn weather.

Revamping a Men's Sport Coat for the Sacramento Tweed Ride - Part 2

April 23, 2019 Jennifer Serr
Tweed Jacket - Horizontal.png

After being invited to the Sacramento Tweed Ride, by friends Lisa and Robb, I had only two weeks to get something together. I took my inspiration from vintage hunting/riding/sporting attire and my imaginings of vintage country living. I hope to one day, own a country home. Until that happens, I can just dress as if I do, right?

Vintage Coat Crusade - Re-Fashion & Restoring my Vintage Coat Collection

January 26, 2018 Jennifer Serr
VintageCoatHoriz.jpg

I've amassed a bit of a coat collection over the last year. Two of these beautiful coats were given to me, one was purchased at a Vintage Fashion Faire and I even made two myself - a Black 1920's Straight Coat & a Red 1930's long swing coat.  For the coats, I didn't make some of my favorite acquisitions needed a little freshening up and/or restoration.

Miss Fisher Wardrobe: Antique Faire HATS to UPCYCLE & Trim

December 5, 2017 Jennifer Serr
UpcyclehatsHoriz.jpg

Last Saturday, I had planned a field trip to SF for some super vintage trim and ribbon shopping.  As it turned out, time was short for everyone, and none of us could make it in the end.  The silver lining turned out to be a trip to the Alameda Antique Faire on Sunday.  Our main shopping stop on the field trip was to visit the showroom of Jennifer Osner who is a collector and dealer of antique textiles and ribbons.  Guess what?  She had a booth at the Antique Faire.  This was so fantastic, because I REALLY wanted to knuckle down on my hats for the 2018 Miss Fisher Convention.

An Epic Day at The Alameda Point Antique Faire

April 25, 2017 Jennifer Serr
Day-At-The-Alameda-antique-faire.jpg

The Alameda Antique Faire is a treasure trove of fantastic finds, vintage treasures and upcycled garbage art.  There are regular booths that are there without fail each month and then there are some others who’ve jumped at the opportunity to sell their wares. After one thwarted (rained-out) attempt, I made my way, this past weekend, out to Alameda Point for the Antique Faire.  I wish I could say that I did it monthly without fail, but really, I only get out there a couple of times a year...
